In 1831 the settlers of Gonzales, Texas received a small cannon from Mexican authorities to protect their town from raids. Four years later with growing political unrest, the Mexican Army decided it unwise to leave the residents of Gonzalez with a weapon and requested the cannon back. After this initial request was denied Mexico sent 100 cavalry to retrieve the cannon. 140 Texans gathered in Gonzalez, brandishing a flag with a star, a cannon, and the words
COME AND TAKE IT, forcing Mexican troops to withdraw after several hours of fighting. While this skirmish had little military significance, it is considered to have been the start of the Texas Revolution.
